Obstetric TENS Vs General Use TENS - Which One Is Right For Labour

Updated: Jun 23, 2023

If you're considering using a TENS machine for labour pain we want to make sure you choose the right one for you.

We categorise TENS machines into two categories, general-use TENS and Obstetric TENS. If you're roaming the isles of Chemist Warehouse or your local pharmacy you might come across a TENS machine, chances are this TENS machine is a general-use option and not specifically for labour. At Birth Bestie, we provide Obstetric TENS machines for your labour TENS hire.

Let's explore some of the key features that Obstetric TENS machines have over general-use TENS that make Obstetric TENS the right choice for your labour.

Power

Obstetric TENS machines are more powerful than general-use TENS. If there is something we know we want in a TENS machine during labour... it's power!

General use TENS machines generally do not reach the power level that women need to tackle those intense contractions, especially during the later stages of labour. At Birth Bestie, we stock the Elle Tens machines that have Opti-Max technology. It gives you an extra reserve of power for when you really need it, especially in the final stages of labour when you need it most.

Larger Electrodes

The electrode pads that come fitted with obstetric TENS machines are generally larger than those on general-use machines. The larger electrodes mean you can enjoy more effective pain relief during labour. The larger electrodes also make it easier to ensure you've placed the electrodes in the correct positions.

Boost Button

When using an obstetric TENS machine you will enjoy a constant level of stimulation from the electrodes and when the boost button is activated you will feel an increase in this sensation. The boost button is designed to be used at the start of every contraction to provide effective pain relief. General-use TENS machines do not have this feature and will follow a constant stimulation pattern that cannot be increased during a contraction.

Contraction Timer

Some models of obstetric TENS machines such as the Elle TENS Plus and Elle TENS 2 come with a built-in contraction timer. This can come in handy, especially during the earlier phase of labour. When you press the boost button on your TENS device it will begin recording a contraction until you press the button again at the end of your contraction.

By recording the duration and frequency of your contractions you can more easily monitor how you're progressing through labour and also keep your healthcare team and birth partner informed.

After Birth Pain

Not only is your Obstetric TENS machine well suited for labour, you can also use your obstetric TENS for those painful post-labour after birth contractions. Generally, these pains are more severe with your second childbirth but is something to keep in mind when choosing a TENS machine.

Obstetric TENS Vs General Use TENS, at Birth Bestie we believe Obstetric TENS comes out on top. We provide you with specialised Obstetric TENS machines called the Elle TENS. We have two modes available, the Elle TENS 2 and the Obi TENS. The key difference between these two machines is that the Obi TENS does NOT have a contraction timer, back-light or the Opti-Max technology however the Obi TENS can be a more affordable option if you're on a tighter budget and still gives you the benefits of a powerful Obstetric TENS with a boost button and larger electrode pads.
