Understanding Pain Relief in Labour: Your guide to TENS, water therapy, massage and birth combs

Updated: Jun 4, 2024

As you prepare for the upcoming journey of labour, it's worthwhile to considering some natural or non drug pain relief options that can help you while you labour at home or the hospital (or on the way there!). One theory that sheds light on why a few non-drug options work so well is the Gate Control Theory of pain relief.

In essence, this theory suggests that sensations other than pain can influence how we perceive pain. Four methods commonly used during labor—TENS, water therapy, massage, and birth combs—leverage this concept to provide relief or reduce discomfort.

TENS, or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, involves the use of a device that delivers mild electrical impulses to specific areas of the body. These impulses can help to block or modify pain signals, offering a form of distraction during labor.

Water therapy, such as immersion in a warm bath or taking a shower, can provide relief by easing muscle tension and promoting relaxation. The buoyancy of water in the bath can also alleviate pressure on the body, contributing to a sense of comfort.

Massage therapy during labor involves the application of gentle pressure and kneading techniques to various areas of the body. Beyond the immediate physical effects, massage can stimulate the release of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving chemicals produced by the body.

Birth combs, also known as acupressure combs, are small handheld tools designed to apply pressure to specific points on the body. This pressure may help to interrupt pain signals and provide relief during labor.

The great thing about all these methods is they can be combined with other medicated pain relief options available during labour. Understanding these methods can empower you to make informed decisions about pain management during labor.

Each woman's experience is unique, so exploring different options and discussing them with your healthcare provider can help you find the approach that best suits your needs.
