Lets face it, childbirth can be a WILD time! The way we each experience labour pain is very personal. Every mums experience is different and can be affected by factors including if you've laboured before, your support person, where you're giving birth and your mental state going into labour.
Many of us opt for pain relief options such as happy gas and epidurals to ease the discomfort. There are also many well known drug free pain management options you can have in your tool box during labour including warm water therapy, massage and birth combs. TENS is an alternative drug-free option that is gaining popularity among pregnant mamas everywhere.
How does Labour TENS work?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It is a non-invasive and drug-free way of managing pain during labour. TENS machines are small, portable devices making them a great option for early labour and labouring on-the-go like that dreaded car ride to the hospital.
TENS works by sending small electrical pulses through your skin, which stimulate the nerves responsible for transmitting pain signals to your brain. By stimulating these nerves, TENS machines can help reduce the sensation of pain during labour.
TENS use during labour can also promote the release of endorphins and we could all use a boost of those during labour! TENS can also help you to feel in control of labour, less anxious and provide a distraction from the contractions as you're fully in control of the machine.
Can I use any TENS machine for labour?
TENS machines are a very common option for various types of pain and it is key to find the right TENS machine for you. You've probably come across a TENS machine when roaming through the isles of your local chemist warehouse or TerryWhite Chemmart. More often than not the TENS machines available at your local pharmacy are basic TENS that are more suited to muscular injuries and not to manage labour pain and other women's health concerns.
At Birth Bestie we provide you with labour specific TENS machines called Obstetric TENS, this means you're getting a machine that has an electrical pulse pattern more suited to managing contractions as well as features such as a boost button and a contraction timer.
If this is your second pregnancy you can also make use of additional features on the Obstetric TENS machine to help you get through those dreaded after-birth pains. You will not find these features on your standard general purpose TENS machines.
Is TENS safe for me?
While TENS machines are safe for most women to use, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider before using one during labour. Your healthcare provider can advise you on whether a TENS machine is suitable for you based on your medical history.
